It had gone as smoothly as could be expected, Walt assured her as the com went dark. They’d listened and now they would start things moving on their end. Those papers had been a stroke of genius, he insisted. Doc’s certified report of death for each and every one. It would be an easy matter to verify that wages were being paid out for those men and that no other activity was linked to their ID-tags. It would, at the very least, substantiate her claims enough that the Coalition would give Lupine and Carmon Gulden a very serious looking over.

She felt drained, empty. She sat, chin down, waiting for the world to start turning again.

“Hey.” Daniel crouched in front of her. “It’s over.”

“No.” She shook her head. “It’s just beginning.”

She opened her eyes to look at him. He filled her vision, shoulders wide enough to drive a truck on and his broad, square face with those sky blue eyes. He wasn’t anything fancy taken as a package, she thought and then smiled faintly. You can’t judge a present by the pretty paper. He might not be the most handsome man she’d ever seen, but he was definitely one of the most unique. Instead of roses and chocolate, he gave her rainbows and laughter.

“You know the problem with taking that first step off the cliff? It’s the feeling of being completely out of control.”

“That’s why I make it a practice not to jump off cliffs without wings strapped to my—back.”

She filled in the hesitation with a different word and chuckled. She still couldn’t seem to find the energy to move. A sigh whispered out of her as he reached out and pulled her against his shoulder. He felt good, warm and real against her cheek. Closing her eyes, she simply leaned against him and savored the feeling.

“See?” he whispered into her hair. “The shoulder is much better than a lumpy old pillow.”

She sniggered, hiding her face in his shirt.

“It’s right here and, look! There’s arms attached.” He wrapped his arms around her shoulders, pulling her closer. “And there is also this really nifty attachment called an ear. Much better than a pillow.”

“Don’t you dare offer to show me any other attachments,” she warned him, still laughing.

He waggled his brows at her. “Not today. Got to save something to impress you with tomorrow.”

Laughter banished the lethargy. Rosalind clung to him, her shoulders shaking. She was still tired, but her heart was beating again and it was getting easier to breathe. She held onto him for another long moment before pulling away.

He didn’t say anything, just tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and stood, pulling her to her feet.

Silence draped between them as they rode the lift down to the main floor. Not a bad sort of silence, just a thoughtful one.

The matter of Carmon Gulden lay firmly in the Coalition’s lap now, she mused as the doors slid back in silent invitation for her to get off.
